A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
